Description
This is a simple optoisolation circuit for manupulating hardware serial port status lines using a microcontroller. On the left side, there are four positions for 0603 or 0805 current-limiting resistors. The forward voltage drop of the optoisolator is 1.0V - 1.2V, and 5 mA is a suggested current. With 5V logic, use 680 Ohm resistors; with 3.3V logic, 470 Ohm. You can also use larger resistors for smaller current, but you'll need to verify the optoisolator outputs work reliably for you. On the right side, there are four positions for 0603 or 0805 pull-down resistors. A suggested value is 10 kOhm, but it depends on your use case. There is an additional through hole pad on the BAT54C diode output, in case you want to tap it off, or omit the BAT54C completely.
