Description
Over the recent years, the public opinion concerning the sexual and gender choices and orientations has significantly changed. What is more, the support for same-sex relations has significantly increased. Thus, the paper seeks to investigate the opinion of the citizens of the United States about the issue of sexual tolerance from the point of view of different generations, political ideologies, and races. https://essaysleader.com/ According to the article “Changing Attitudes on Gay Marriage”, the opinion of the American people has changed due to the generational change. The younger generation seems to be more tolerant to the same-sex relations. Among people who were born after 1981, more than 70% are tolerant to different sexual choices. Among the representatives of the “Silent Generation”, 39% support various sexual orientations. However, in 2011, this ratio composed 21%. The article “Changing Attitudes on Gay Marriage” states that among liberals, 79% support same-sex relations; among moderates, this ratio composes 64%; at the same time, only 30% of conservatives are tolerant towards the gender and orientation choices. However, in comparison with 2001, the percentage of such supporters among liberals and moderates has increased by 23%, and among conservatives – by 12%. According to the article “Changing Attitudes on Gay Marriage”, in 2001, the number of supporters of the same-sex relations among black and white non-Hispanic race composed 32% and 34% respectively. In 2015, this ratio increased by 24% among white non-Hispanic race, and by 39% among black non-Hispanic race. The article “Changing Attitudes on Gay Marriage” states that nowadays 55% of the citizens of the United States are tolerant towards the sexual and gender choices and orientations. In comparison with 2001, this ratio increased by 15%. W. Harms claims that nowadays “Americans overwhelmingly support basic civil liberties and freedom of expression for gays and lesbians”. Thus, the society of the United States has done one more step towards the respect of human rights and the formation of the democratic country.
