Description
Modern world, full of high technologies, presupposes exchange of personal data in any form. Moreover, the technological advancements brought significant disregard towards personal information and the loss of its value. In fact, people feel free to provide personal data without considering any possible threats that such careless attitude might pose. Different cases of illegal use of personal information from [pre written essays](https://manyessays.com) should stimulate people to reconsider their digital behavior. Moreover, companies and governments need to address the issue of “privacy bargain”, which is a voluntary enclosure of personal data provided in exchange for free services. Unawareness does not liberate from responsibility. After reading the article and watching the videos, I understood that my unawareness, or rather negligence, towards the knowledge I could obtain does not protect me from harm. Considering the aspects that Doctorow (2012) describes, I conclude that, just like the majority of people, I do not care about my personal data protection. I did not use to treat the idea that my personal data could be used, which would result some serious impact. I noticed that undeleted messages sometimes could damage relationships, or the news shared with a can be turned against the person. However, I did not think of this problem from a more global perspective. Doctorow (2012) indicates that scientific research proves that personal information can be successfully used to cause indirect influence on someone. For the first time I have thought about how little evidence is needed to manipulate someone’s mind, and how much we tend to share without adding any value to what we possess. I had never thought of accepting cookies as giving a permission to use my personal information. I had no idea that someone might need the information I provide while registering on a website. Indeed, the article provides a new perspective and makes the readers reconsider many of their attitudes and behaviors. Before reading this article, I was absolutely careless. I did not perceive my personal information as something valuable or worth attention. From this point, I will think twice before providing my personal data during registration on some website or agreeing to accept cookies, as I do not want it to be used against me. Registering on some website never meant sharing personal information for me. However, if this aspect is considered, astonishing results come up. We provide our personal data to obtain free services, but, in fact, we have no idea what our data is used for. For this reason, the companies and governments should reconsider the “privacy bargain”, which has became a common action in today’s society. There should be strict and clear regulations about using services. Personal data is something valuable, and successful companies, according to Doctorow (2012), know that. The more evidence the company can obtain from the client through registration or making one accept cookies, the more successful it is. At this point, the claims about protection of privacy similarly to the defense of private property arise. Personal data can be regarded as informational property, and the companies should respect it and avoid making clients share it carelessly. What is more, governments should address this issue with much attention, as the use of customers’ personal information for commercial purposes has become a common practice. Even if having access to personal data is regarded as a means of protection from terrorists, it is still not justified. Although for the users evidence exchange is the “privacy bargain”, there is no bargain in it, as the shared information brings a considerable profit to the companies, and no benefits to the users. To conclude, one’s digital behavior should be reconsidered, as the personal information is valuable property that is often used against the user if shared. Accepting cookies or giving a phone number while registering on some website cannot be as harmless as people expect it to be. This “privacy bargain” is useful for the companies that want to obtain personal data, which can be used to increase profits. Therefore, the governments should reconsider current laws and regulations to ensure better protection of the informational property.
