An Arduino Nano using the ATMega328PB microcontroller. We dispense with the USB interface as that can be EASILY replaced using a separate USB-to-Serial converter (eg FTDI, CH340G, etc) and this gives us more space for the extra pins and saves power on the Serial Interface chip.

Have you had any difficulty with the ATMEGA328PB running from the external clock?  I built a several boards of my own design with the same parts as you, but only 2 out of the 4 I've built so far function correctly.  One board works marginally (it executes code, but the serial output is often corrupt, so it's probably missing clocks).  Looking at the clock circuit with an oscilloscope, I can see it's ticking at 16 MHz, but it's considerably less swing than what I see with an ATMEGA328P clock circuit on an Arduino Nano.  This concern is mentioned in the datasheet.  Searching Google, there's quite a lot of discussion about this issue with the 'PB parts.  I'm thinking that I might just design out the external 16 MHz clock and go with the internal 8 MHz clock in the next rev of my board.

@cdhooper Remember that the "full switng" oscillator (fuse) eoption has been removed with the 328PB - you might need to change the fuses to tell the chip it should not be using that. Using the internal oscillator can give problems uploading sketches at higher sppeds, certainly no more than 57600 and possibly lower will be required. Using an exteranl 16MHz crystal has not caused me any problems so far, but as you say, the forums are full of questions. Maybe the crystals have to be of a certain type to accomodate the new osc options?
