Description

Power amplifier v6.1 for ARDF 2m fox

Schematics and a PCB for Amateur Radio Direction Finding (ARDF) fox power amplifier for 144 MHz (2m) band. Largely based on ideas taken from DF1FO, PE1GRL and PE5EDW designs.

The PA is powered from the CNTL board. To meet the constant RF output power it uses boost switching power converter.

The RF stages are:

  • Si5351A RF oscillator
  • 2SK3078 PA driver
  • RQA0011 final stage
  • 146 MHz Low Pass Filter

The Amplitude Modulation is achieved by directly modulating the PA driver gate bias from the controller DAC. The linearity is quite acceptable and is much better than switching the bias by square-wave signal. The linearity of resulting modulated RF signal can be theoretically improved by issuing pre-distortion in the MCU code.
