You only need to update a package if either you change say from a 0.25Watt leaded resistor to a physically smaller 0.125Watt part or if the system cannot find a package that matches the one you have specified in the schematic.
If you just change a resistor from say 1k to 22k but do not change the power rating (i.e. the package size) then you do not need to update the package.
