Auto router "gives up"

I have one project that won't fully autoroute.  It does about 20%, then quits, even though there are unrouted nets that consist of two pads sitting right next to each other, I have other projects with components packed tighter than this one, that don't have this problem. I'm running the autorouter locally, but I don't see any output in the console window to indicate a problem. Is there some way to tell what makes the autorouter give up like this? All of these projects use SMT parts, but nothing smaller than 0805.
