Clearance and Solder Mask Questions
653 6
Nick Mills 5 years ago
I am new to PCB design and had a couple questions. When I submitted my board, a representative emailed me this: **Missed solder mask on bottom and top copper layer** - Basically, if there is no solder mask needed, then **we will cover it all with tin OR cover it all with solder mask inks**, since there is no bare copper ( copper exposed) available. Do I just add a solder mask then? If so, how do I do it? I also have some clearance errors I do not know how to fix/why they are appearing. Thanks for any help. project link (GCNWPM.mkIII): [https://easyeda.com/nicklepicklenam/gcn-wireless-power-mod](https://easyeda.com/nicklepicklenam/gcn-wireless-power-mod)

Hi, there don't appear to be pads at all on these, so everything would be covered with solder mask (what do you intend to solder where?) or, if they don't put solder mask, the tracks and vias you have will be covered with tin (as pads normally would). It's hard to understand your intent with the projects you shared.

@Nick Mills, Sorry but proceeding with your design as it stands is likely to be a disappointing waste of your time and money. You need to stop what you are doing and read and about the elements of a PCB and how to make successfully design one in EasyEDA. There are several mistakes in your projects. 1. You have created a set of PCBs directly with no schematic. 2. You have tried to make through hole pads for components using vias instead of multilayer pads.  3. You appear to have tried to make top and bottom layer edge connection pads using tracks instead of pads.  4. You have not used any library PCB footprints. Tracks and Vias are -unless you click the Expose Copper button - automatically covered in solder mask whereas pads are automatically left exposed. @martin Yeah this would probably be difficult to understand without any context. I basically have 5 through-hole components that I tried to solder together on a perfboard but it ended up being too messy. The only thing I'm trying to accomplish here is to make a board with a few connections already made, that way I can just solder each one of my parts in place and be done. I just downloaded a design of a perfboard and edited it down to this. From what I understand, solder pads are for surface mount parts which I do not have, so I thought using vias would be fine.

Hi Nick, that's not right. Pads are needed to solder. Pads _may_ have holes for through-hole parts. What you have in your schematic are vias and some tracks, which are not used to solder parts, but rather used to route tracks across layers. If you've already spent the money, I suppose you could get away with your boards as they are if you instruct JLCPCB to NOT include any solder mask, in which case, as Andy says, this will be a 100% waste of money, since there will be nothing for you to solder to.

@martin Okay thank you for that clarification. That said, is there anything else I would need to do to this design other than replaces the vias with pads?

You can just replace all the bits of track and the vias with pads or even just click the Expose Copper button for them all but if you are going to use EasyEDA as an EDA tool and not just as a way to reproduce a strip board layout then you'd be better off starting again and following the Design Flow in the Tutorial to create a properly constructed schematic which you can then just convert to and route to create a professional quality PCB. Then you'll learn how to use what is a very powerful tool properly for more complex designs.
