Ground Traces

Samuel.Reddekop 6 years ago
Hi, I am new to circuit designing and having some trouble with some of my traces. The problem is that when I highlight the board and apply the Copper Area function to complete the design, some my ground traces don't show up and disappear entirely when I do the photo view. If someone knows what is going on please let me know. Thanks

please check at design manger, whether if you deselect it. ![enter image description here][1] [1]: /editor/20171102/59fab9940ae64.png

* Have you assigned a netname to the Copper Area that is the same as that assigned to the nets that disappear (which you refer to as ground)? Your project is private so only you can see it. If you can share your project publicly or privately with me (my username at easyeda) then I can offer more advice. Section (4) in: https://easyeda.com/andyfierman/Welcome_to_EasyEDA-31e1288f882e49e582699b8eb7fe9b1f should help.

@andyfierman Hi andyfierman, I have the same problem with this thread-starter. and I searched and searched and I ended up here. And I cannot make my project public (how to do it?) I searched the forum it says right click on the project, but I see no such option. Basically, I have exactly the same problem. My ground traces are missing after I add copper, then I realized it is the same thing that happened at this tutorial video: https://easyeda.com/Doc/Tutorial/ (notice that after add copper area, the ground traces are also missing). So, is it normal? If it is normal, where can I see my ground connection/traces? Thanks.

@andyfierman Hi Andyfierman, I searched one of your projects, I arrived at this one: https://easyeda.com/andyfierman/Elements_of_a_simple_PCB-e42c7b2a4e17449f821a97d04806aeeb Then, I opened the PCB in editor, and noticed that in fact indeed the Ground trace is not viewable after you add the copper also for your PCB. So I guess it is normal? But may I please ask you why? (the explanation for it just disappear)? It doesn't seem to go to bottom layer also. Thank you for teaching me this basic PCB knowledge.

@andyfierman You can check the tutorial video https://easyeda.com/Doc/Tutorial/ at minute: 5:55 if you do not understand what I meant. Thanks Andy.

@andyfierman Hi! my project has been set to Public. https://easyeda.com/prietess/Automatic_Terrace_Light-0296aee998db413fb2c7e711b7eaa8dd And hence, would you be so kind as to tell me what actually happened when we add the copper area? (I searched 'copper' under the documentation you provided above, but couldn't find explanation on why the Ground trace is gone when we add copper. This might be basic PCB design knowledge, but I am really sorry that I don't have basic. Hope you dont mind to explain briefly. Thanks!

@Samuel, @prietess, Why are you surprised that the `GND` tracks become invisible when you add a copper area that is also assigned to `GND`? That is *exactly* the purpose of a Copper Area: to join all tracks and pads with the same net name as that assigned to the Copper Area with - as far as the other tracks and pads permit - a continuous copper flood. The GND tracks do not 'disappear'. They are just merged into the GND Copper Area. If you hover the mouse over the tracks within the Copper Area, then they will still highlight in white. ![enter image description here][1] If you click on one of the highlit track segments and then press the `H` key, they will all light up. ![enter image description here][2] If you make the Copper Area invisible by setting `Copper Zone` to **Invisible**: ![enter image description here][3] all those tracks will still be there.

@prietess, Two other comments: 1. You have tried to produce a PCB directly from a Simulation Schematic. You will have had to edit the PCB after first converting your Simulation Schematic to PCB. Therefore your PCB is no longer synchronised to your Schematic. Please read: https://easyeda.com/andyfierman/From_Idea_to_PCB_an_EasyEDA_Design_Procedure-78173f41ed2d468cb6880e6d21483f11 2. You have a spurious via at: x = 658.9, y = 1793.9 [1]: /editor/20171104/59fddacf4bf0d.png [2]: /editor/20171104/59fddb068a3e1.png [3]: /editor/20171104/59fdca64c02d3.png

@prietess, Is there any reason you have restricted everthing to only the top layer? If you lay it out as a double sided design you can make a better layout and if you then order your boards from EasyEDA you will get professional quality 2 sided boards at no extra cost. :)

@andyfierman Thank you very much Andyfierman! 1) Actually it is not really a simulation schematic (?), I only have 1 VCC, don't have other PWL/Pulse or other kinds of simulation voltage sources. But I indeed used the schematic symbol as I don't wish to have 2 kinds of schematic, worrying that I might forget to change 1 of them. From your link, I learnt the fact that there is something called Spice symbol which is a better route to PCB. 2) I removed the via, thanks. 3) There is not really a reason about restricting everything to only top layer, I just feel that it is less confusing with only top layer, haha. 4) By the way, when I made some changes in my schematic, I thought I could use the function 'Update PCB', but to my surprise, the result is I started fresh (placement+connections in PCB reseted). I wonder why? Is Update PCB function only useable when your symbols are all spice symbols (if yes, I found it strange)? Thank you for the explanation about the copper area display!

@andyfierman If I want to fabricate the PCB, yes I will surely make a better drawing by making use of 2 layers. Thanks~!

`From your link, I learnt the fact that there is something called Spice symbol which is a better route to PCB.` Not true. Please read: https://easyeda.com/andyfierman/From_Idea_to_PCB_an_EasyEDA_Design_Procedure-78173f41ed2d468cb6880e6d21483f11 carefully. If you do not want to simulate the circuit then you are not restricted to using Spice Symbols, you are probably better off chosing Schematic Symbols. `By the way, when I made some changes in my schematic, I thought I could use the function 'Update PCB', but to my surprise, the result is I started fresh (placement+connections in PCB reseted). I wonder why? Is Update PCB function only useable when your symbols are all spice symbols (if yes, I found it strange)?` This is what I meant when I said: `You have tried to produce a PCB directly from a Simulation Schematic. You will have had to edit the PCB after first converting your Simulation Schematic to PCB. Therefore your PCB is no longer synchronised to your Schematic.` Please read: Section (4) in: https://easyeda.com/andyfierman/Welcome_to_EasyEDA-31e1288f882e49e582699b8eb7fe9b1f again carefully. This describes why you are finding your PCB being trashed when you do `Update PCB...`. In fact if you were to try to convert your schematic to a PCB (it's safe to do that, it won't overwrite the PCB you already have), then you'll find the conversion fails because you have package errors. To overcome these errors, you have edited the packages *in the PCB* and not the package *assignments in the schematic*.

* Create a schematic that passes into PCB layout with no errors **first**. * **Then** do your PCB layout.
