How does the auto router decide which "attempt" to keep?

Sometimes some of the attempts look really good, but the final result seems worse. What constitutes as a failed attempt? I often have something like 99 attempts, 56 completed, 43 failed, still the result I'm left with has a huge number of missing connections. Could the auto router have some advanced settings, like "try harder", which would make it run for a longer time or something like that?

Looks like I was being silly. 99 attempts would mean 99 networks / connections. 43 failed would mean 43 of those connections remain unconnected.
