Just as a trial design I drew a simple schematic (4 components), which resulted in a layout showing parts placement only. How do I get a layout showing connections as well? Also, how do I specify trace width?

In the meanwhile, if you have a PCB with blue "ratlines" joining the pads of the PCB footprints as the pins of the symbols are joined in the schematic then everything is working as expected. You just have to place the footprints then route the tracks.
Track width can be controlled in the right hand panel or by right clicking after selecting the track.
