Replicating a project without having to reposition all the PCB components

As good practice, I made a backup of my project after completing the design and PCB for what I knew would be the first version. When I decided to work on an improved version, while still keeping the original untouched for reference, I clone it and started to work on it. However, when I went to update the PCB it started the whole PCB again with all the components positioned down in the bottom right like starting anew. How can I duplicate a project and then start on changes without having to start the PCB all over again - a lot of work! Thanks ![Original PCB.jpeg](//image.easyeda.com/pullimage/epYUAGbH3GaIdBeyEMk70OylEoT2hsYHKEmY8l5C.jpeg) ![After cloning.jpeg](//image.easyeda.com/pullimage/OY4IW7tzaKzVZ07WQ7DBxRaFF4UTh6cI5PEjLLee.jpeg)

"...I **made a backup of my project** after completing the design and PCB for what I knew would be the first version. When I decided to work on an improved version, while still **keeping the original untouched for reference, I clone it** and started to work on it." What did you clone: the original project or the backup copy of the original project? When you say **project** do you mean a project containing a schematic plus the PCB that was generated from it? A couple of suggestions. 1. You do not need to separately make backups to preserve an original project because EasyEDA allows you to make different versions of a project. Using versions should avoid any chance of the Schematic and the PCB getting out of step: [https://docs.easyeda.com/en/Introduction/Version-Control/index.html](https://docs.easyeda.com/en/Introduction/Version-Control/index.html) 2. If your project was built on EasyEDA before about V6.4.7 then you may have to do Reset Component ID: [https://docs.easyeda.com/en/Schematic/Reset-Component-ID/index.html](https://docs.easyeda.com/en/Schematic/Reset-Component-ID/index.html)

I did a backup of the original project and then loaded up the schematic and PCB again using the 'Open file' command. I seem to have solved the problem by doing a 'Save As' with the original files and renaming them as a different project, a version 2. Then when I edit the new schematic it just makes those changes to the PCB and does not reset all the components as I was finding. I guess this is another way of doing a 'different version' like you were referring to?
