Wire tool places an X instead of starting a wire

I was about to wire my PCB until all of a sudden the Wire does just place an X to where I want to start. No wire appears and I can only ESC. Also the White Dot appears over already routed wires and I can move them. But for the remaining components the white dot does not appear. Seems this started after I tried to make a Pad-Pad connection.

No, of course not. Meanwhile I found a "solution" by dumping the whole PCB and making it new. This time without Pads.

@thomas.kilian.0815, Were the problem pads objects that were added directly into the PCB after doing the original Convert to PCB rather than adding a symbol in the schematic that then pulls them into the PCB when you do Update PCB?
