Please could you help a beginner? I am struggling with forming a copper ground plane. I have followed the tutorial instructions, but cannot see any solid area after or before the rebuild. I assume I'm missing some step.

Have you a net labelled as ground in your design? Have you assigned that net name to the copper area?

@andyfierman @andyfierman Yes to both, but I will re-check

Have you set the Copper Area to Visible in the PCB Canvas attributes?

@andyfierman Thanks for all your help. The net I thought I had labelled as ground , wasn't. Have changed it and it worked. Ashley

I do have an issue with the copper layer. The board has 4 layers and I need one ground (GND) layer. Do I have to generate 4 copper layers manually? In the Layer Manager is specify 'Inner1' as 'plane'. If I look at the Copper Area Manager, the 'Inner1' is not selectable.Please tell me what to do. I've tried different ways of doing this, even if I manage to have a layer dedicated to GND there are no vias next to the smt ground pad, which I expected. Another request, how do I avoid vias inside the component area? Thank you! Regards Jan

Thank you for a quick reply. I've made a testboard called 'Ground plane test' public. For a 2 layer board I may generate ground (GND) plane and even select between top/bottom layer. I've made one copper layer from 'PCB tools'. GND to U1 is connected to the bottom layer through a via (ref.picture), however I'm not able to specify 'plane' for the bottom layer in the 'Layer Manager' to avoid routing, is this a limitation?. ![image.png](//image.easyeda.com/pullimage/achSTMLhXQrQxlfrnYoMdO6Uo2RQi2j9eFXTri6e.png) When specifying 4 layers and 'Inner1' to 'plane', I'm not able to select 'Inner1' as GND, it's not selectable. I have an idea that this should be possible. Please inform. Thanks! Jan

@janrichardbecke, This is a different question from the OPs topic. As requested in: [https://easyeda.com/forum/topic/How-to-ask-for-help-and-get-an-answer-71b17a40d15442349eaecbfae083e46a](https://easyeda.com/forum/topic/How-to-ask-for-help-and-get-an-answer-71b17a40d15442349eaecbfae083e46a) please: 1. repost this as a new topic and;  2. post the url to your public project.
