How would you simulate a touch pad input?

What type of touch pad? Capacitive? Resistive? Single button? Multiple buttons? Smartphone type touch screen? How are you sensing the touch: generating a signal that is passed through the touch back to the pad or sensing ambinet noise and mains hum? Please give us a bit more information about your application to guide our advice to you. :) In the meanwhile, you may get some clues from this: http://doras.dcu.ie/20201/1/MastersCorrectionsFinal.pdf

Capacitive input like in a touch lamp to generate an input to a circuit of some type.
